Installing and Configuring FileZilla

FileZilla is a free program that can be used to synchronize your Svija website with local files on a PC.

The goal of this configuration is to make 

The FileZilla configuration presented below will enable you to update your website simply by double-clicking folders that are marked as changed.

Download FileZilla from this link:

The free version (first column) is fine for synching a Svija site. Be sure to click “skip” for the free offers when installing.

Installing FileZilla

For Select components to install and Destination Folder, accept the defaults settings.

When asked if you want to Install Additional Software click Decline.

Initial Configuration

First, create two folders on your PC:

  • site folder, wherever you want, named whatever you want
  • a folder called sync, inside the first folder

Launch FileZilla and:

  • type ctrl-S for the Site Manager (or click the top left icon)
  • click New Site
  • in the left pane,  enter the name of your site: example.com

In the right pane, under General:

  • change Protocol to SFTP
  • change Host to the name of your site (e.g. example.com)
  • change Port to 22
  • leave Logon Type as Normal
  • under User enter the username from the account creation email
  • under Password enter the password from the account creation email

In the right pane, under Advanced:

  • under Default local directory, browse to the sync folder inside the site folder
  • under Default remote directory, enter:
  • check Use synchronized browsing

Connect to the site:

  • click Connect
  • check Save passwords when asked

You may see the following message:

The server’s host key is unknown. You have no guarantee that the server is the computer you think it is.

  • check the box that says Always trust this host, add this key to the cache
  • click OK

You may see a warning that the folders are not synchronized, asking if you wish to continue synchronized navigation.

Click Yes.

FileZilla is Open

Hiding “dot” Files

In the list of files on the right, you may see system files like .cache.

These have no importance and it’s nice to hide them in FileZilla:

  1. click the View menu then Directory listing filters…
  2. click Edit filter rules… in the bottom left corner
  3. click New and call it Hidden Files
  4. change the pulldown menus to say Filename / begins with / [type a period]
  5. click OK
  6. check the boxes next to Hidden Files in both columns
  7. click OK

Settings specific to Svija

In FileZilla, go to the menu Edit › Settings.

Under Connection › FTP › SFTP

  • check enable compression (at the bottom)

Under Transfers › File exists action › Uploads:

  • select Overwrite file

Under Interface:

  • On startup of FileZilla: Restore tabs and reconnect
  • Filesize format: Binary prefixes using SI symbols
  • File lists › Double-click action on files: Transfer
  • File lists › Double-click action on directories: Transfer

Under File editing:

  • Default editor: Use system’s default editor for text files

Click OK

Under the View menu:

  • uncheck Local directory tree
  • uncheck Remote directory tree

Quit and reopen FileZilla to make sure the preferences are saved correctly.

Using FileZilla

To upload files, double-click on folders that you have modified in the left pane.

To download files, double-click on folders in the right pane.

Keep Your Life Simple

You don’t need to use FileZilla to navigate the folder hierarchy, only to synchronize your computer and the server.

Synchronized Browsing should always be activated. (ctrl-Y or icon to left of binoculars).

You’ll never need to open the folders or navigate in FileZilla; you’ll be manipulating files on your on computer while using Illustrator.
